The 1890s Through the Lens of a Hidden Camera
The 1890s Through the Lens of a Hidden Camera
In
1893, a 19-year-old mathematics student, called Carl Størmer, took up a
rather unusual hobby. He started walking around the streets of Norway's
Oslo, taking pictures of everyday life by means of a secret camera
hidden in his clothing. These photos are now considered to be of great
historical importance, since they depict the people of
nineteenth-century Oslo as they really were, and they differ greatly
from the serious posing trends that dominated photography at that time.
